ARROW
GLACIER/WESTERN BREACH CRATER CAMP RISKS
1. Please note that the Arrow Glacier/Western Breach
Route is now very dangerous due to rock falls. We have investigated the route
and received a notice from Kilimanjaro National park that 95% of deaths on
Kilimanjaro in recent years is caused by clients overnighting at the Crater and
the ascent via Arrow Glacier Route and Western Breach
2. Constant rock falls that are
very unpredictable and extremely dangerous.
3. Some hikers will certainly
have problems on sections that require scrambling.
4. Boulders on the route are stacked in a way that could trigger a major
rock fall, which can take out everyone or anything in its path. Once on the
route there is no way back. If a person dies or is sick the guides or porters
will have to carry the body/person to the summit and then come down via Barafu.
So you can see how this route is dangerous. This not only endangers the
climbers, but puts the guide and porters lives at risk too.
5. After crossing the glacier and ascending the rocky ridge, turning
back is not an
option.
Clients who become sick, weak will have to ascend into the crater and evacuate
via Stella point to Barafu and descend to Mweka camp.
6. To camp at the crater
at the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is also dangerous, due to lack of oxygen. For
people who have low or high blood pressure or any lung/breathing Problems this
can cause serious problems such as altitude sickness, severe headaches, cerebral
oedema or pulmonary edema. Cerebral Oedema Is recognizable by severe headaches,
loss of balance and dizziness leading to Coma. Pulmonary Oedema results in
coughing up pink sputum. Both conditions, if left unchecked, will lead to coma
and death unless a rapid descent is made.

For the above reasons we are no longer
using this route until Further Notice. For clients who have already booked on
this route, and still insist on using it
